Fromthesecondpicture,wecanfindsomereasons.Whyisthenumberofanimalspeciesdecliningyearbyyear?Apparentlyanimalshavebeevictimsoffashionindustry.Animalskinhasbeenusedtomakefashionableclothesandtheseclothessellatahighprice.Sosomegreedypeoplebegintokillanimalsinalargequantity.Thisirresponsiblebehaviornotonlybreaksthebalanceofnaturebutalsoendangersthelivingenvironmentofhumanbeings.

AsfarasIamconcerned,somethingmustbedonetostopthisillegalaction.Webelieve"nobuying,nokilling".First,wemustmakeconcerninglawstoprotecttheseanimalsindanger.Second,wemusttakesomemeasurestoprotectanimalseffectively.Animalsareourfriendsandpartofourenvironment.Third,weshouldraisepeople'sawarenesstoprotectanimalsandourenvironment.Inthisway,wecanbuildaharmonioussocietyandensureasustainabledevelopment.

Athoughtexperimentontheintelligenceofcrows

HowmanyofyouhaveseentheAlfredHitchcockfilm"TheBirds"?Anyofyougetreallyfreakedoutbythat?Youmightwanttoleavenow.Sothisisavendingmachineforcrows.Overthepastfewdays,manyofyouhavebeenasking,"Howdidyoucometothis?Howdidyougetstarteddoingthis?"Itstarted,aswithmanygreatideas,ormanyideasyoucan'tgetridof,anyway,atacocktailparty.

About10yearsago,Iwasatacocktailpartywithafriendofmine.Weweresittingthere,andhewascomplainingaboutthecrowsthatwerealloverhisyardandmakingabigmess.Andhewastellingmeweoughttoeradicatethesethings,killthem,becausethey'remakingamess.Isaidthatwasstupid,maybeweshouldjusttrainthemtodosomethinguseful.Andhesaidthatwasimpossible.

AndI'msureI'mingoodcompanyinfindingthattremendouslyannoying,whensomeonetellsyouit'simpossible.SoIspentthenext10yearsreadingaboutcrowsinmysparetime.

Andafter10yearsofthis,mywifesaid,"You'vegottodothisthingyou'vebeentalkingabout,andbuildthevendingmachine."SoIdid.ButpartofthereasonIfoundthisinterestingis,Istartednoticingthatwe'reveryawareofallthespeciesthataregoingextinctontheplanetasaresultofhumanhabitationexpansion,andnooneseemstobepayingattentiontoallthespeciesthatareactuallyliving;they'resurviving.AndI'mtalkingspecificallyaboutsynanthropicspecies,whichhaveadaptedspecificallyforhumanecologies,specieslikeratsandcockroachesandcrows.

AndasIstartedlookingatthem,Iwasfindingthattheyhadhyper-adapted.They'dbecomeextremelyadeptatlivingwithus.Andinreturn,wejusttriedtokillthemallthetime.Andindoingso,wewerebreedingthemforparasitism.Weweregivingthemallsortsofreasonstoadaptnewways.So,forexample,ratsareincrediblyresponsivebreeders.Andcockroaches,asanyonewho'striedtogetridofthemknows,havebecomereallyimmunetothepoisonsthatwe'reusing.

SoIthought,let'sbuildsomethingthat'smutuallybeneficial;somethingthatwecanbothbenefitfrom,andfindsomewaytomakeanewrelationshipwiththesespecies.SoIbuiltthevendingmachine.

Butthestoryofthevendingmachineisalittlemoreinterestingifyouknowmoreaboutcrows.Itturnsout,crowsaren'tjustsurvivingwithhumanbeings;they'reactuallythriving.They'refoundeverywhereontheplanetexceptfortheArcticandthesoutherntipofSouthAmerica.Andinallthatarea,they'reonlyrarelyfoundbreedingmorethanfivekilometersawayfromhumanbeings.Sowemaynotthinkaboutthem,butthey'realwaysaround.

Andnotsurprisingly,giventhehumanpopulationgrowth,morethanhalfofthehumanpopulationislivingincitiesnow.Andoutofthose,nine-tenthsofthehumangrowthpopulationisoccurringincities.We'reseeingapopulationboomwithcrows.Sobirdcountsareindicatingthatwemightbeseeinguptoexponentialgrowthintheirnumbers.Sothat'snogreatsurprise.

Butwhatwasreallyinterestingtomewastofindoutthatthebirdswereadaptinginaprettyunusualway.AndI'llgiveyouanexampleofthat.ThisisBetty.She'saNewCaledoniancrow.Andthesecrowsusesticksinthewildtogetinsectsandwhatnotoutofpiecesofwood.Here,she'stryingtogetapieceofmeatoutofatube.Buttheresearchershadaproblem.Theymessedupandleftjustastickofwireinthere.Andshehadn'thadtheopportunitytodothisbefore.Yousee,itwasn'tworkingverywell.Sosheadapted.

Now,thisiscompletelyunprompted;shehadneverseenthisdonebefore.Noonetaughthertobendthisintoahookorhadshownherhowitcouldhappen.Butshediditallonherown.Sokeepinmind--she'sneverseenthisdone.

Right.Yeah.Allright.Sothat'sthepartwheretheresearchersfreakout.

Itturnsout,we'vebeenfindingmoreandmorethatcrowsarereallyintelligent.Theirbrainsareinthesameproportionaschimpanzeebrainsare.There'sallkindsofanecdotesforthedifferentkindsofintelligencetheyhave.Forexample,inSweden,crowswillwaitforfishermentodroplinesthroughholesintheice.Andwhenthefishermenmoveoff,thecrowsflydown,reelupthelines,andeatthefishorthebait.It'sprettyannoyingforthefishermen.

Onanentirelydifferenttack,atUniversityofWashingtonafewyearsago,theyweredoinganexperimentwheretheycapturedsomecrowsoncampus.Somestudentswentout,nettedsomecrows,broughtthemin,weighedandmeasuredthem,andletthembackoutagain.Andtheywereentertainedtodiscoverthatfortherestoftheweek,whenevertheseparticularstudentswalkedaroundcampus,thesecrowswouldcawatthemandrunaround,andmaketheirlifekindofmiserable.

Theyweresignificantlylessentertainedwhenthiswentonforthenextweek.Andthenextmonth.Andaftersummerbreak.Untiltheyfinallygraduatedandleftcampus,and--gladtogetaway,I'msure--camebacksometimelater,andfoundthecrowsstillrememberedthem.

So,themoralbeing:don'tpissoffcrows.Sonow,studentsattheUniversityofWashingtonthatarestudyingthesecrows,dosowithagiantwigandabigmask.

It'sfairlyinteresting.

Soweknowthesecrowsarereallysmart,butthemoreIdugintothis,themoreIfoundthattheyactuallyhaveanevenmoresignificantadaptation.

Video:Crowshavebecomehighlyskilledatmakingalivinginthesenewurbanenvironments.InthisJapanesecity,theyhavedevisedawayofeatingafoodthatnormallytheycan'tmanage:dropitamongthetraffic.Theproblemnowiscollectingthebits,withoutgettingrunover.Waitforthelighttostopthetraffic.Then,collectyourcrackednutinsafety.

Sothey'relearningfromeachother.Andresearchbearsthisout.Parentsseemtobeteachingtheiryoung.Theylearnfromtheirpeers,theylearnfromtheirenemies.IfIhavealittleextratime,I'lltellyouaboutacaseofcrowinfidelitythatillustratesthatnicely.Thepointbeing,they'vedevelopedculturaladaptation.Andasweheardyesterday,that'sthePandora'sboxthat'sgettinghumanbeingsintrouble,andwe'restartingtoseeitwiththem.They'reabletoveryquicklyandveryflexiblyadapttonewchallengesandnewresourcesintheirenvironment,whichisreallyusefulifyouliveinacity.

Soweknowthatthere'slotsofcrows.Wefoundoutthey'rereallysmartandtheycanteacheachother.Whenallthisbecameclear,Irealizedtheonlyobviousthingtodoisbuildavendingmachine.Sothat'swhatwedid.Thisisavendingmachineforcrows.AnditusesSkinneriantrainingtoshapetheirbehavioroverfourstages.It'sprettysimple.

Basically,whathappensisthatweputthisoutinafieldorsomeplacewherethere'slotsofcrows.Weputcoinsandpeanutsallaroundthebaseofthemachine.Crowseventuallycomeby,eatthepeanuts,andgetusedtothemachinebeingthere.Eventually,theyeatallthepeanuts.Thentheyseepeanutshereonthefeedertray,andhopupandhelpthemselves.Thentheyleave,themachinespitsupmorecoinsandpeanuts,andlifeisdandyifyou'reacrow--youcancomebackanytimeandgetyourselfapeanut.

Sowhentheygetreallyusedtothat,wemoveontothecrowscomingback.Nowthey'reusedtothesoundofthemachine;theykeepcomingbackanddiggingoutpeanutsfromthepileofcoinsthat'sthere.Whentheygetreallyhappyaboutthis,westymiethem.

Wemovetothethirdstage,whereweonlygivethemacoin.Now,likemostofuswhohavegottenusedtoagoodthing,thisreallypissesthemoff.Sotheydowhattheydoinnaturewhenthey'relookingforsomething:sweepthingsoutofthewaywiththeirbeak.Theydothathere,andthatknocksthecoinsdowntheslot.Whenthathappens,theygetapeanut.Thisgoesonforsometime.Thecrowslearnthatalltheyhavetodoisshowup,waitforthecointocomeout,putitintheslot,thengettheirpeanut.

Whenthey'regoodandcomfortablewiththat,wemovetothefinalstage,wheretheyshowupandnothinghappens.Thisiswhereweseethedifferencebetweencrowsandotheranimals.Squirrels,forexample,wouldshowup,lookforthepeanut,goaway.Comeback,lookforthepeanut,goaway.Theydothismaybehalfadozentimesbeforetheygetbored,andthentheygooffandplayintraffic.

Crows,ontheotherhand,showupandtheytryandfigureitout.Theyknowthismachinehasbeenmessingwiththemthroughthreedifferentstagesofbehavior.

Theyfiguretheremustbemoretoit.Sotheypokeatitandpeckatit.Andeventuallysomecrowgetsabrightidea:"Hey,there'slotsofcoinslyingaroundfromthefirststage,hopsdown,picksitup,dropsitintheslot,andwe'reofftotheraces.Thatcrowenjoysatemporarymonopolyonpeanuts,untilhisfriendsfigureouthowtodoit,andthentherewego.

So,what'ssignificantaboutthistomeisn'tthatwecantraincrowstopickuppeanuts.Mindyou,there's216milliondollars'worthofchangelosteveryyear,butI'mnotsureIcandependonthatROIfromcrows.

Instead,Ithinkweshouldlookalittlebitlarger.Ithinkcrowscanbetrainedtodootherthings.Forexample,whynottrainthemtopickupgarbageafterstadiumevents?Orfindexpensivecomponentsfromdiscardedelectronics?Ormaybedosearchandrescue?Themainpointofallthisformeis,wecanfindmutuallybeneficialsystemsforthesespecies.Wecanfindwaystointeractwiththeseotherspeciesthatdoesn'tinvolveexterminatingthem,butinvolvesfindinganequilibriumwiththemthat'sausefulbalance.

Thanksverymuch.(Applause)
